Fishing in Vemdalen | Vemdalen Sweden

Fishing in Vemdalen

Sport fishing is a long-standing tradition in Vemdalen; no fisherman leaves here without a fine fishing story in the luggage. Fishing in Vemdalen symbolises highland fishing at its best.

In Vemdalen fishing is an essential part of our cultural heritage and we are happy to share the great joy of fishing awaiting in our mountains and forests. In this order we have strived to make fishing in Vemdalen a comfortable and easily accessed activity. The fishing season starts already before Midsummer, at the time when the early summer greenery is at its most tender and the light evenings provide for magic settings at the still glittering lakes and frothing streams. The season draws to an end only when the first nights of frost have made the deciduous forest explode in autumn hues.

The guide to the bites

The best fishing news this year is that it is now easier than ever to find the best dream fishing in Vemdalen and a wide range of waters in the surrounding mountains and forests. All that is needed is our fishing guide – produced in a back pocket format. In this 13 of the local fishery conservation areas have joined forces to describe where to find the bites, what it is that bites and when, together with descriptions how to get to the waters in the respective areas. Fiskeguiden leads the way to all of 250 waters, ranging from pleasant family jigging for perch and spinning for pike to fabulous fly-fishing in waters that attract discerning aficionados from all over the world. Fiskeguiden is sold at most of the local facilities and Turistinformationen at Skalets Torg or you may order it in our web shop. The route to the great joy of fishing has never been easier!

The fish of the season

The fishing season starts already before Midsummer, at the time when the early summer greenery is at its most tender and the light evenings provide for magic settings at the still lakes and frothing streams. The season draws to an end only when the first nights of frost have made the deciduous forest explode in the autumn tones.

The silvery grayling is the Province fish of Härjedalen and a popular catch for new friends of fly-fishing. It is found in streams from the mountains down to the forest. The best time for grayling is around Midsummer – but September is also a good month. There is no need to be a skilled fly-fisherman to land the grayling; using a spinner and bait can deliver brilliant results. The brown trout bites from the end of March and come Midsummer it is the peak period for the shy Arctic char, found in highland tarns just like in lakes in the forests.

High summer is the best time for spinning or trolling for the gluttonous pike. Whitefish is fished in waters all the way up to the border area between forests and peaks. In the same border zone will see the perch biting, in our opinion the tastiest of the catches. Fishing for perch is perhaps the most enjoyable fishing for families with young children. A basic rod, line, float, hook and a tin of bait – that’s all you need. Imagine an early morning in the serenity at a still lake, mirroring the scenic surroundings. Or a late summer evening just before the sun sets behind the still snow-clad peaks; these are moments for fishing when life for once seems fair. Even more family fishing awaits in the dozens of put-and-take waters presented in Fiskeguiden, also available in an app format for download. These are reached by roads leading almost down to the edge of the lakes and a bite is practically guaranteed.
